How can we celebrate Thanksgiving in 2020?
How can we safely celebrate Thanksgiving without losing the joy of the holiday? It’s supposed to be a time of family and gratitude and reconnecting with our loved ones. Here are a few ideas to keep the spirit of Thanksgiving during the 2020 pandemic.
Put an Emphasis on Family Traditions you Do Within Your Household
Wether that’s hand turkey crafts with the kids, or making grandma’s famous pumpkin pie, or having everyone around the table say what they are thankful for. These activities, though made fun with others, can be done right in our homes. Celebrate
Create New Family Traditions
What new tradition can you start this year to help fill the void of big family gatherings? What about cooking a new dish you’ve never had to make before because Aunt Shirley always does? Or make a gratitude jar? Everyone writes down something they’re grateful for and puts it in the jar and on Thanksgiving you read them out loud. Come up with something unique to your immediate family. You never know this may be your kids favorite Thanksgiving ever.
Use Video Chat and Virtual Meetings
Instead of driving to the grandparents house schedule a virtual meeting with them via Facetime, Zoom, Skype or other video chat service. It won’t be the same without big hugs and grandmas’s kisses but at least you’ll have peace of mind that you aren’t spreading anything to anyone.
Find Creative Ways to Show Your Thankfulness
Have some fun with this one. What are some ways you could show your family and friends how thankful you are for them?
- put together a video slide show
- sing them a song
- mail a package of goodies or handmade items
- put together a basket and leave it on their porch
- stand outside their house and declare to the world how much you appreciate them
- make or bake them something
- make gift baskets for essential workers
Celebrate Outside
They say outdoor gatherings are better than indoor gatherings with no fresh air. If the weather is nice where you live have Thanksgiving outdoors. A picnic lunch or dinner outside on a big farmhouse table sound like wonderful ways to celebrate the season of thankfulness.
Wear a Mask and Keep Your Distance
It may seem silly to wear a mask in your families home but it may reduce the spread of germs during the holidays. If you have family coming from different households setup different tables for each family group. That way when you have to take your masks off to eat you won’t be spreading germs to the cousins.
Spread Some Cheer with Outdoor Decorations
Yard signs have become very popular during the pandemic. Share part of your celebartion on the holiday with your neighbors by decorating your yard or front porch. It makes me smile to see everyones decor during the holidays wether it’s inflatable turkeys or lights. I just love it and so do my kids. Bring a smile to someone unexpected this year.
